IES featured in The Engineer for National Apprenticeship Week

26th June 2024

We are delighted to have been featured in The Engineer magazine as part of the publication’s National Apprenticeship Week coverage.

Running from Monday 5th to Sunday 11th February, National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the successes of young recruits all over the country, and highlights the importance of apprenticeship schemes to the workforce.

Mark Methuen-LeyOur People and Culture Manager, Mark Methuen-Ley, has written an opinion piece that looks into the current state of engineering education and the skills gap faced by the industry. He considers young people’s perception of engineering degrees and discusses solutions for improving engineering education and preparing students for a career in the sector.

Mark brings the article to life with the personal accounts and views of IES engineers and apprentices, looking at the future of apprenticeships and their value to engineering.

Our belief in the power of apprenticeship schemes

IES has furthered its apprenticeship scheme commitment with the creation of several roles that offer a hands-on pathway into engineering.

In creating new job opportunities for young people within the organisation - such as trainee Export Packer and Case Maker and Operations Assistant – we can continue to attract the best young talent and develop their skill sets with a variety of dedicated training programmes. Guided by experienced mentors and benefitting from a structured pathway, our apprentices can build on their specialities and broaden their expertise with our cross-training opportunities.

How do apprenticeship schemes work at IES?

At IES, apprentices can take vocational qualifications as they accrue practical experience within our set-up. Each apprentice is assigned an experienced engineer to be their mentor as they gain valuable knowledge and develop their skills in the field.

Thanks to the strong internal support we provide them with, IES apprentices have every opportunity to progress within the organisation. There is the potential to be placed in engineering roles all over the world, including with our Equipment Relocation and Installation services, Export Packing team, and Electrical department.
